Chemical Constituents of Essential Oils

Essential oils are comprised of unique chemical constituents. The therapeutic benefits of an essential oil are determined by its unique chemical make-up. While essential oils share properties such as antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial each will have varying degrees of these benefits and many more.

Pure essential oils can be subdivided into two distinct groups:
  • The hydrocarbons made up almost exclusively of terpenes including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and di – terpenes.
  • The second group the oxygenated compounds which are comprised of esters, aldehydes, keytones, alcohols, phenols and oxides.
